The person behind The Emigrant's Walk
WHY I CREATED THE EMIGRANT'S WALK
I’m Cathy O’Neill, a local tour guide with a deep love for the landscape, history and stories of County Derry.
I created The Emigrant’s Walk to bring the story of emigration out of the history books and back into the landscape where those journeys began. Walking around Carntogher, visitors can stand in the places people once knew as home, hear the stories of those who left, and begin to imagine what it meant to say goodbye.
For me, this experience is about more than dates and facts. It is about people, place and memory — and creating a connection between those who live here today and the generations whose journeys carried them across the Atlantic.
